Get Acquainted with James Patterson-the Man behind Best-Selling Books
James Patterson is a best-selling author (duh), and maybe you’ve never read not even one of his best-selling books, but you know his name. I recently read one of his books for the first time. I know a best-selling author, and I haven’t read one of his books!
His 2022 memoir James Patterson is the book I read, and I liked it so much I’ll need to read (at least some of) his other books. While reading the book James Patterson I learned about who is behind the words and how he has come to grace the bookshelves of libraries and bookstores.
James Patterson was a copywriter who became the CEO of a large advertising agency. I’m a copywriter, so that resonated with me. When I read James Patterson, he writes in a fast and concise manner. For a fun fact, did you know he wrote: “I’m a Toys R Us Kid” in the popular Toys R Us jingle?
Secondly, it wasn’t until the death of his first real love, who died of a brain tumor, that he decided to make something out of his writing career. There is something that takes writing from a hobby to a career, and this was it for James Patterson. For me, it was the death of my mother, who always wanted me to do something more with my writing. I was upset that she never got to hear what I wrote, even something about her that I wrote over 20 years before she died.
In his memoir, James Patterson spends a few pages talking about the importance of kids reading and his desire for them to become reading addicts. My master’s degree was focused on teaching students to read, so clearly, I love this part of the book. Here’s a beautiful quote from James Patterson, “Right now, there’s nowhere else- not TV, not the movies, not the internet-where kids can meet as many different kinds of people and begin to understand them and maybe learn to accept who they are as they can in books.”
Here’s another quote, “If our kids, your kids, don’t learn to read well, their choices in life will be seriously diminished. That’s just a fact. It’s science.”
